Today sees the release of LavaSoft’s Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 10. It is a major improvement, putting it in the same league as favorites Avast, Avira and AVG.

The free version is now much more powerful and won’t bug users about premium updates, which is an excellent development. It’s got a really clear interface, is relatively light on resources and effective.

First impressions

Installation is via Ad-Aware’s installer, which takes files directly from LavaSoft, ensuring you’ll always get the most up-to-date version. Once running, you’ll see Ad-Aware has a bold new color scheme, and the status of your computer is communicated through this color: green means safe; orange danger. You can immediately see the date of the last scan and update, and all of Ad-Aware’s features are visible and easy to use.

Malware detection

Ad-Aware 10 is more than just a cosmetic update – the app uses the GFI VIPRE malware engine, which is really light on resources, with a independently tested malware detection rate of 97%. You can scan your PC whenever you want and, if you’re going to watch video or play a game, switching on Gaming Mode will mean Ad-Aware leaves you interruption-free.

Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 10 is an effective and much-improved security application. Time will tell if this version can challenge the big three free security apps.

Will you try the new, improved Ad-Aware?
