Set between the first and second Borderland games, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a new game designed to delight fans of the franchise. That’s exactly what we thought after trying it at E3 2014.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel gives you the ability to play with four new characters in a new world: the moon Pandora. New weapons and experiencing the struggles of low gravity are the main attractions in this latest installment of the saga.

Battle it out in low gravity

The main feature is the exciting new world – Pandora, a low gravity satellite where high altitude jumps are the main attraction of the gameplay. There’s also another interesting development: there’s no oxygen in the atmosphere. Players have to get to oxygen stations when the oxygen meter tells them within the HUD.

Jumps and oxygen change the way you’ll play Borderlands quite considerably, especially in the epic battles with four players against dozens of enemies, when you’re flying through the air and shooting. These are, without doubt, the most glorious moments of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

There are also lots of new weapons. The laser allow you to cut enemies, and with the weird weapon combinations you can also wield a laser weapon which can shoot acid fire. In addition, a new element, Cryo, has been added, so that now enemies can be frozen.

New characters and skills

There are also four new playable characters – Nisha, Athena, Claptrap (the robot) and Wilhelm. Each comes with their own unique abilities, such as using drones and kinetic powers.

I played Athena, more by chance than by choice (demo stations were pre-allocated). I liked the power of her shield, which allows you to absorb bullets and throw your enemies. What surprised me during my fifteen minute demo is how varied and agile the game is. The aerial battles are fun and all the characters have a special move that lets them strike mid-air.

Yes, this is still a pure Borderlands. The mixture of RPG and action inside a giant co-op mode still works really well. There are shots fired at close range, dozens of enemies, and millions of weapons. The introduction of oxygen to the game component really gives a new layer of strategy to the fighting: it’s easy to run out of oxygen in the heat of battle, and then start to lose energy. You’ve got to stop everything you’re doing and find a source of fresh air if you don’t want to die.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Graphically, it’s very similar to the previous versions, so despite a few tweaks here and there, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is not a huge step visually. That said, it’s the recognized visual style of the franchise..

Nothing hugely different, but still hotly anticipated

A lot of gamers have been eagerly awaiting Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel This third version isn’t so different to previous Borderlands, but it does have some interesting new features to amuse players. It goes on sale for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 17.
