We know you OnSoftware readers like to get the most out of your videos, which is why so many of you liked our Best Free Video Editors post. But what if you want to do something simpler, like splitting a long video file into smaller parts so you can send it by email, for example?

Luckily for you, there are lots of great, free video splitters and joiners out there that will do the job perfectly. Here are 5 of the best:

Free Video Cutter does exactly what it says on the tin! It’s not fancy, but it’s perfect for trimming your MPEG 1/2, MPEG4, DivX, Xvid, AVI, WMV, MOV and Flash videos, with no complications or a huge download involved.

VidSplitter is another simple app, but does offer you more options and greater flexibility. Monitor what you are doing with the preview window, tweak codec settings and video height, and mess around with audio settings with this easy-to-use free app.

VidCrop comes from the same developer as VidSplitter, but it’s a slightly more complete program. In fact, the two are pretty much sister apps, so download VidSplitter and try it out. If you’re a fan but need more editing power, move on to this souped-up version.

Movica is another simple but fully featured splitting and joining app. This one is perfect if you are working with slightly less popular file formats, such as .wmv, .flv, or .mpg, types that aren’t always supported by other apps. It also allows you to select and delete multiple portions from a file, a really handy attribute.

Easy Video Splitter is last in our list. True, it’s pretty ugly, but for a bare-bones job of splitting or cropping files, it does the job as well as anything else. It supports a good range of file formats, including especially large files, which is helpful. Another major plus is that it supports batch operations, a real time saver.
