This week’s free browser game is a beautifully polished and smooth arcade shoot ’em up called Pixel Purge. There is a back story but more important is the excellent pixel art that makes up this arena shooter. You move your spacecraft around with the arrow key, aiming and shooting with the mouse – the gameplay is very much like the Xbox hit Geometry Wars. There are a variety of aliens to deal with, plenty of power-ups to help you and, unusually, you have a power bar. This means it’s not a one-hit-death arcade game, and when it starts to get hectic, you can take some hits.
Pixel Purge isn’t revolutionary, but it is a welcome mix of Space Invaders and Geometry Wars that’s worth posting a high score for! Play now over at Kongregate. Requires Flash.
