Microsoft versus GoogleA matter of days after Google complained that Microsoft’s Windows Vista contained anticompetitive elements, the software giant has apparently agreed to make changes to its OS. It’s now expected that Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will include a patch which changes the way Vista’s built in desktop search tool works, making it easier for users to install alternative search utilities from other developers (like, say, Google).

Techcrunch has some comment on how it’s odd for Microsoft to apparently “quit without a fight”, while David Hunter reckons there was a political expedient involved for some of the state attorneys general involved. Either way, it remains to be seen if this decision marks a change in Microsoft’s Google strategy, or if it’s no more than a sensible decision aimed at avoiding the hassle and costs of another lengthy court case.
