Have you ever seen one of those images where people or objects seem to reach out of the picture’s margins? It’s called an out-of-bounds (OOB) effect and it’s something you can do for yourself with your favourite picture. Not sure how? Launch Photoshop, follow this easy tutorial and see for yourself!

First of all, select the picture you want to work with, duplicate the background layer and create two more new blank layers over the copy.

Reorganize your working space by deleting the original background and placing the two layers you created over and below the background copy. Rename them as “frame” and “back” respectively.

On the frame layer, make a rectangular selection with the Marquee tool and fill it up with the color you want the picture frame to be (in this case I chose white). Take the Marquee tool again, select another rectangle inside the first one and delete its content. Now you’ll have a white border over your photo.

Use the Edit > Transform > Perspective to create a nice effect on your picture.

Now move to the background copy and erase everything you don’t want to see in your final picture. In my photo, I erased the whole landscape behind the biker. Using the Zoom tool can be very helpful when deleting tiny areas. Also, don’t forget to erase any frame bits you don’t want to appear over the final picture.

Select the back layer and fill it up with any color you like.

Some final retouching (using the Blur tool to smooth edges, adding a slight shadow to the frame) and you’re done! You created your first OOB photo.
