skypecallwindow.JPGAs the new Beta of Skype for Mac is unleashed, Apple users now have even more of an excuse to gloat about to their PC-using pals. The IP software developer has traditionally neglected Mac users somewhat, but this new release betters anything that Windows users can pick up.

The new version 2.6 features call transfer meaning that if you’re chatting to someone and decide that it’s better off dealt with by someone else you can pass it through without any hassle. Unfortunately this doesn’t work with landline numbers, but nevertheless it’s a sign of the maturity of the product as a complete telephony solution.

Another addition that Mac users have been missing out for some time is the typing indicator, allowing you to see when someone is replying to a chat message. Sometimes the simplest omissions can be the most annoying, and this has long been the case with Skype for Mac, which often led to much confusion of whether a person was getting back to you or not, and when to carry on typing.

Although the interface hasn’t changed, there are a few more upgrades to bring the product in line with the PC version, such as the ability to handle public chats, Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency tones for automatic answering services during Skype-to-Skype calls, as well as an overall improvements in sound quality. Personally, we reckon this is the most polished version of Skype to date and PC users must now be salivating over the prospect of a new Windows release.
