What is Web 3.0?

Web 3.0It seems that we’ve only just got our head around what Web 2.0 is when Web 3.0 is already on the horizon. 2008 is predicted to be the year when Web 3.0 really starts to take-off so what is it exactly and what can we expect from it?

In actual fact, Web 3.0 doesn’t actually refer to one particular type of software. It’s a catch-all term that’s being used to describe the growing use of the internet as a database, applications accessible from non-browser interfaces and most importantly, the convergence of artificial intelligence with these. However, this is still a very vague concept and you know things are going to get confusing when even the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, can’t even define it. Scmidt said of Web 3.0:

My prediction would be that Web 3.0 will ultimately be seen as applications which are pieced together. There are a number of characteristics: the applications are relatively small, the data is in the cloud, the applications can run on any device, PC or mobile phone, the applications are very fast and they’re very customizable. Furthermore, the applications are distributed virally: literally by social networks, by email. You won’t go to the store and purchase them… That’s a very different application model than we’ve ever seen in computing.

Sounds like exciting stuff and no doubt Google will be pioneering the technology as it has already done in Web 2.0 with Google Gears and Google Docs. One undoubted aspect of Web 3.0 will be the move towards to 3D rendering in everything from desktops to file management. However, this will obviously be held back until enough people have the required processing power to handle it effectively which really, only the latest PC’s and Macs can do currently. Principally however, whilst Web 2.0 was about connecting people, Web 3.0 will be about making these connections more meaningful, connecting knowledge and making use of the internet more intuitive and useful for all.
