Crytek, the developer behind the Crysis series, has announced a new version of its game engine CRYENGINE.

CRYENGINE 3 came out in 2009, and was used for Crysis 2 and 3, perhaps the best looking first person shooters of this generation. For the latest version, Crytek is dropping version numbers altogether, calling it simply CRYENGINE.

Explaining why there are no more version numbers, Crytek’s Areil Cai said,

supplying an engine is not about delivering a static piece of software…it’s about providing the latest, greatest technology we can, all the time.

CRYENGINE will be constantly updated, so it’s ‘always new’. Crytek has a reputation for always being at the vanguard of graphics technology in gaming, and you can see just how impressive the new CRYENGINE is in the tech demo below.

CRYENGINE sees Crytek following others in the software industry into offering their products as a service, like Adobe is doing with its Creative Cloud.

Crytek also announced that its hugely popular CRYENGINE® SDK is being updated, the version that is free to use for non commercial purposes. The update will remove some restrictions, including some which prevented users from working in CRYENGINE offline.
