An overlooked security bug in iOS 7 leaves your email attachments unencrypted. Security researcher Andreas Kurtz has found and successfully exploited a security flaw in iOS 7 that allows someone downloaded and see your email attachments. He has informed Apple of the flaw and the company is working to fix it.

Kurtz successfully used the exploit on an iPhone 4 running iOS 7.1 and 7.1.1 with IMAP enabled email accounts. He also exploited an iPhone 5s and iPad 2 running iOS 7.0.4.

While the security flaw sounds scary, an attacker needs physical access to your iPhone or iPad to exploit this vulnerability. The exploit requires putting the device in recovery mode and accessing a specific folder for email attachments. If you’ve lost your phone and have sensitive email data, you can use Find My iPhone to wipe your device as a last resort.
