Facebook Messenger is finally making its way onto Microsoft’s mobile operating system. Hours before the start of Mobile World Congress 2014, Microsoft confirmed that Facebook Messenger would be coming to Windows Phone in the coming weeks, although no specific date was announced.

Facebook’s app for Windows Phone currently leaves a lot to be desired. Although chat can be accessed within Facebook for Windows Phone, messages take forever to load, and the interface constantly needs refreshing. Having a dedicated Messenger app should fix these issues.

Windows Phone is catching up to Android and iOS as a strong contender for third most popular mobile operating system. BlackBerry announced today that BBM will be coming to Windows Phone this summer and Nokia even introduced a new device running a forked version of Android, the Nokia X. The company hopes the device will serve as a gateway to Windows Phone for emerging markets by integrating a lot of Microsoft’s services into the operating system.

It’s clear the Facebook sees messaging as a crucial part in its mission to connect the world and getting Messenger on as many platforms as possible should help it succeed.
