How to: Backup your Tumblr

After the massive outage sufferered by Tumblr at the beginning of December, many Tumblr users began looking for backup solutions for their blogs. Unlike other similar services like WordPress or Blogger, Tumblr doesn’t have an built-in exporting or backing up feature yet. This means that if you want to have your posts backed up in case of another 2-day long outage, you need to look somewhere else.

The Goodies section on the Tumblr includes a backup application, but it seems to be a bit neglected. It has been in beta testing for more than a year now, and it’s only available for Mac. You can run  it every few days so that the app adds all your newly published posts to an incremental backup, but you also have to take into account that it doesn’t back up notes or private blogs.

Another simpler alternative to backup your Tumblr is using the Tumblelog Backup Tool, an online app that imports all the content from your blog to an HTML file. You can then preview that file on your browser and save it directly to your hard drive. I just tried it with my blog and it worked like a charm, though it may take a little longer if you have lots of posts online.
