Before you can get great audio out of Windows Movie Maker, you have to put great audio into the program. Basically, your output is only as good as your input. For this reason, you’re going to want to use the best recording equipment that you can. Although you can manipulate sound in Windows Movie Maker, a bad recording is still going to be a bad recording.

Add Your Audio

Music to My Ears: Getting the Best Audio

Once you’re satisfied with your recording, open Windows Movie Maker and click on the Home tab. From there, select Add and then Add Music. This will give you the option to select your audio files.

Fading Your Audio in and Out

You can also fade your recording in or out in Windows Movie Maker. To do this, select the track that you would like to fade and click on the Options tab under Music Tools. You then have the ability to choose whether to fade the audio in or out, but you also have the ability to choose the speed at which to fade the recording.

Changing the Volume of Your Audio Tracks

Windows Movie Maker also gives you the ability to change the volume of music tracks and audio tracks contained within video. To change the volume of a music track, select the track and click on Music Tools. In the Options tab under the Audio Group, select Music Volume and drag the slider to the desired level.

To change the volume of an audio track contained within a video, select the video track you want to change. Next, click on Video Tools and the Edit tab. Click on Video Volume and once again drag the slider to the desired level.

Mixing Sounds

The process of mixing audio is one that requires patience. When you have multiple tracks playing at once, they can tend to step on each other, so it’s important to adjust audio levels so that everything can be heard clearly. For example, if you have a video playing of someone walking through the woods along with music and narration, you’re going to want the viewer to hear the footsteps, the music, and the narrator. Take some time to play around with audio levels until everything can be heard. This may take some adjusting along the way as sounds change in volume.
