We’ve rigorously tested the most important antivirus suites for your PC, and the results are in. This year’s winner is Norton Antivirus, followed by ESET and Kaspersky.

You can read the full explanation of our methodology here. We test each app for security, performance and editors rating. The first two are as objective as we can make them, while the last rating is the personal opinion of our expert editors.

This year’s biggest losers are Ad-Aware and Microsoft, which both dropped out of the top 5 this year. Surprisingly, Microsoft Security Essentials failed mainly on performance. It’s not as efficient as other apps despite being developed in-house. Ad-aware also did worse this year in terms of performance, although neither got the worst results.

Congratulations to Norton for jumping right back to the top of the ratings for 2014 Antivirus suites!
