We discovered this week that The Elder Scrolls Online will be not be free to play, and require a monthly subscription. Now Matt Firor of developer Zenimax Online has confirmed there will also be an premium in-game shop.

In an earlier interview, Zenimax claimed that the subscription service would guarantee players have ‘the entire game’ available to them. The inclusion of a premium shop in the game, even if it’s only selling non-essential fun and cosmetic items, seems to contradict that statement. Some users on Reddit predict that this is evidence that The Elder Scrolls Online is prepared to go ‘free to play’ if the subscription model fails, as it did with Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The Elder Scrolls Online will have an in-game shop

As we wrote earlier this week, in the current climate a subscription model for a massively multiplayer online role playing game is certainly brave. But even with the inclusion of an in game shop, a subscription will mean there are fewer barriers to making progress in the game.

According to the interview with ESOHUB.de, development of The Elder Scrolls Online is nearly complete, although there is still no fixed release date. Zenimaz are already working on content for future updates after release.
