One of the things we liked most about Google Hangouts, Google's new messaging app, are the emoticons and emojis. They're unique, cute and well-designed, so it's easy to find and recognize them.

Just like in Whatsapp, Google Hangouts' emoticons are divided into categories: classic emoticons and gestures, special occasions and activities, the natural world, the urban world and abstract icons.

New emoticons for Google Hangouts

If you want to check them all out - and there are lots! - have a look at the following tables we've made up for you. Since we're on the subject, though, we want to know - what app do you think has the nicest emoticons?

1. Moods, people and gestures

2. Everyday objects, events and parties

3. The natural world and weather

4. Technology, transport and communication

5. Symbols, signs and posters

What do you think of these smileys? Awesomely cute or a waste of time?!

I think these are fun. Although, there are a lot and I don't know if anyone would ever use all of these effectively! But still fun when you're bored and talking to someone just as bored :)

Is there anywhere to find shortcuts for these? It's much easier to type a few characters for an emoticon than search through pages.

These are so cute, I really love using them. They seriously made my day when I saw them! Please don't take them away...

    @Michael

When you start a conversation with someone in Hangouts, it's much easier to use them. Just click on the gray smiley in the bottom left hand corner of the chat window and you'll be able to access them more easily.

As for actual shortcuts, some of the usual ones will work (:), for example), but I haven't been able to find a definitive list. If I do, I'll be sure to write about it here!

These are TERRIBLE! They are repulsive and juvenile and look like crappy clip art from the 70's. I'm all for change and I love the new Google Hangouts, but these gawd-awful abominations have got to go!

If you're not enjoying these new emoticons and smileys then you must be a boring person anyway and never needed smileys at all in your conversations because you're miserable, so what are you even complaining about?

These smileys are ugly, childish and annoying. I prefer the classic ones or no images at all. They are getting me to stop using emoticons. As someone said in a different board, they look like retarded gumballs.

Hi i would prefer a customizable way of adding my own smileys to the default ones as it was easily possible with MSN (now fused with Skype in most counrties). That was a real fun! Discovering and sharing competely new smiles and sending it to my friends! You were able to use most images, icons, smileys a and flash animations as smileys. It would miniaturize automatically. Customizable shortcuts working excellently too. Some of the default smileys could also move which can be more fun. So Google ! Hangouts = good job ! But if you want happy users, make it customizable ! That would meet best the individual needs...

There are some grumpy commentators here. I actually really enjoy the new icons. They make the chatting experience a little more real, interactive, and fun. The colors are positive and just having these many icons shows how Google is adapting to the generation and the human experience.

I actually really love them! Love the colours, the variety, the options, all of it! I'm nearly 40 but can still appreciate cute and fun stuff, sheesh, some people sound old and bitter. I only wish there were some dirty emoticons like Skype had heh heh.

I like the whatsapp emoticon more. Especially the innocent emoticon, where it shows it's big teeth.

Come to Japan and you'll see people here use these numerous emojis effectively all the time. Those "Galapagos keitai's" have trained the nation to be real emoji experts.

Oh, I love those Hangouts emojis but I wish they had made them look exactly the same on their iOS app. My wife and I use Hangouts for cross-platform messaging (I recently bought a new Android phone while she is still stuck with her iPhone 4S) and, although those emojis "go through" across platforms, they get translated to their equivalent symbols and things often get lost in translation. For example the "eye" symbol consists of a single eye on Android but it has a pair of eyes on iOS. So my creative attempt at creating a big human face made of two eyes + nose + mouth resulted in a monster with freaking four eyes. This particular incident was good for laugh but sometimes these things get real communication failures.
